During term time we run week-long placements (5 days) in the role of Learning Assistant, where you would be assisting us in the delivery of our shows, workshops and more. You would also help us create content such as blogs and interactive games. You’ll be taking concepts in science and making them fun and engaging for our different audiences. During the week, you will have the chance to meet with current medical and dental students, and possibly QMUL researchers from a variety of healthcare related fields.
Once you have joined the Youth Scheme, you can send us an email with your preferred dates to organise.
Gain confidence and skills through volunteering with us. Our volunteers assist with events for families during the school holidays and evenings. You’ll support us in ensuring our visitors get the most out of their experience and gain hands on experience of event delivery and science communication.
This is advertised through our Youth Scheme newsletter which you will get each month once you’ve signed up.
Our free Summer School takes place during July / August, and involves a week packed full of activities, providing first-hand experience of science and health-related careers. Visit the laboratory, try clinical skills and meet our scientists through a range of workshops and talks.
Whilst this member exclusive opportunity is free, the Summer School has limited places, so we hold an application process which opens in spring. It is open to members of our Youth Scheme who are in year 12 or equivalent.
Our virtual mentoring scheme sees our Medical and Dental students paired with Youth Members. Monthly virtual meetings over the course of 6 months give you the opportunity to hear firsthand about their experiences of university and medical or dental school. They can offer you support with personal statements, interview skills, university applications, and much more.
This is open to Youth Members who are in Year 13 or equivalent. It is advertised at the end of summer through our Youth Scheme newsletter which you will get each month once signing up.
Throughout the year we run a variety of science and healthcare related careers and advice sessions. These include personal statement & CV clinics, interview practice, revision sessions, and more.
These vary year to year and are advertised through our Youth Scheme newsletter which you will get each month once signing up.
These are opportunities to meet in groups with other Youth Scheme members
You have a chance to input your own ideas on how the Youth Scheme should be run through our steering group which meets a couple of times a year.
We also run Youth Forums several times a year where Youth Members meet with scientific researchers from Queen Mary University London. These are often to help plan one of Centre of the Cell’s Big Question Lectures.
These are advertised through our Youth Scheme newsletter which you will get each month once signing up. Once you have joined our Youth Scheme you can join our steering group at any point, and we will email you when we have a meeting coming up.
